I'd long been tempted to see the modern city, known for its food and nightlife, after the 15-year civil war that ended in 1990. Having someone show me around enabled me to explore more of the history and beauty of this underrated country. With a promotion by Qatar Airways and some creative uses of frequent-flyer miles, I enjoyed some time in Qatar and Jordan and a couple of days in one of my favorite cities, Dubai.
