Trip 16 - Inner Indochina and Japan

20 May to 17 June 2014

My girlfriend had been dreaming for years of visiting an elephant sanctuary in northern Thailand. It's not something I'd have thought to do myself, but it's something that I realized might be very educational and fun, especially with the prospect of company. Also, I'd never been to northern Thailand or to Laos, whose guidebook had stood on my shelf since my previous Indochina trip, eight years before -- I'd bought the book but never made it into the country. I was determined to rectify that. And since I'd repeatedly told Charlie how wonderful Japan was, we were both happy to add a week there at the end of our trip.
